Interconnected

CLIENT: HARVARD UNIVERSITY, ZONE 3

LOCATION: 135 WESTERN AVE, ALLSTON MA

YEAR: OCTOBER 2020

PROJECT OVERVIEW

In October 2021, we collaborated with Boston-based artist Sophy Tuttle to transform the facade of the former Harvard University New England Deposit Library at 135 Western Avenue. Originally a storage library, The mural seamlessly blends with the building’s history. The 3,000 sq ft mural, Interconnected, is the largest piece yet in the collection of murals produced as part of Zone 3’s Walls on Western public art initiative in Allston.

Sophy hopes her bright, carefully researched mural will help transform this space into a “place” as it provides the seed for a more active, vibrant, collaborative, and discursive arena. “The designs play on the idea of a textbook illustration of a food web. I remember as a kid looking at my biology textbooks and really enjoying the images of plants and animals and seeing how they supported each other. To me, these illustrations are a really nice example of art and science combined”.
